Venus Williams Beats Sister Serena for 5th Wimbledon Title
(VOAnews.com) -- Venus Williams of the United States has beaten her younger sister, Serena, for a fifth women's title at the Wimbledon grass court tennis championships in London.
Venus overcame windy conditions to beat Serena in straight sets. She rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the first set 7-5, and then won the second set, 6-4. Serena had won the two previous Wimbledon finals meetings with her older sibling.
Serena has an overall record of five wins in seven Grand Slam meetings with Venus.
But Serena did not leave Wimbledon without a championship trophy. She and Venus defeated Australia's Samantha Stosur and American Lisa Raymond to take the women's doubles title (6-2, 6-2).
In men's doubles, Daniel Nestor of Canada and Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic beat Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden and Kevin Ullyet of Zimbabwe (7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3).
The men's singles final Sunday is a rematch of last year, with world number-one player Roger Federer of Switzerland facing four-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain.
It is the third time in a row that Federer and Nadal have met in the Wimbledon final. Federer has been victorious in both previous meetings. The Swiss star is seeking a landmark sixth straight title at the All England Club.
